Merrimack- Grey Rigorism

Artist: Merrimack
Album: Grey Rigorism
Genre: Modern Black Metal
Year: 2009
Website: Myspace

FOR FANS OF: WATAIN, TAAKE, SATYRICON, NACHTMYSTIUM, ORCUSTUS

Merrimack play a very modern sounding style of Black Metal. They sound alot like Watain, but I don't think that is a bad thing. They are touring the US this winter with Marduk and Nachtmystium.

Fall of the Bastards/Book of Black Earth Split

Artists: Fall of the Bastards/Book of Black Earth
Album: Split
Genre: Blackened Melodic Death Metal
Year: 2005
Website: Myspace / Myspace

FOR FANS OF: DAWN, DISSECTION, THE FUNERAL PYRE, BELPHEGOR

I put this split up mainly for the three Fall of the Bastards songs. The Book of Black Earth side is good, but the Fall of the Bastards side blows it away. Both bands play have a blackened death metal sound but Fall of the Bastards have much more catchy melodic guitar riffs and an overall epic vibe. This is Book of Black Earth's first official release after their demo and Fall of the Bastards' final release.

Marduk- Dark Endless

Artist: Marduk
Album: Dark Endless
Genre: Old-School Swedish Death/Black Metal
Year: 1992
Website: Myspace

FOR FANS OF: BOLT THROWER, CREMATORY, CARCASS, HYPOCRISY

Before Marduk turned into the blast beat black metal machine that they are today, they played thick, riff-heavy death metal with hints of black metal. This album is comparable to Darkthrone's pre-black metal album, Soulside Journey. The slow, doomy, death metal groove parts set this album apart from later Marduk albums.

Orcustus- Self-Titled

Artist: Orcustus
Album: Orcustus
Genre: Black Metal
Year: 2009
Website: Last.Fm

FOR FANS OF: DARKTHRONE, CRAFT, BATHORY, GEHENNA, TAAKE, WATAIN

Orcustus is two man Norwegian Black Metal band who released this self-titled full length on Southern Lord earlier this year. Drummer, Dirge Rep, has played in several notable Norwegian Black Metal bands (Gorgoroth, Enslaved, Craft, Aura Noir, Gehenna). Their modern take on the classic Black Metal sound is similar to Watain, often times venturing into black'n'roll territory. The catchy, melodic guitar riffs and raw but clear production makes this a solid modern Black Metal album.

Aura Noir- Black Thrash Attack

Artist: Aura Noir
Album: Black Thrash Attack
Genre: Thrash/Black Metal
Year: 1996
Website: Myspace

FOR FANS OF: ABSU, BATHORY, SLAYER, IMMORTAL, DARKTHRONE

Aura Noir are a prime example of modern day black thrash. Their thrash guitars and black metal vocals are a unstoppable combo. The guitar riffs on this album are what really stand out and give this album multiple playback quality. Another one of their albums, The Merciless, was posted on here a while back, so make sure to grab that too if you enjoy this one.

Dissection- The Somberlain

Artist: Dissection
Album: The Somberlain
Genre: Black/Death Metal
Year: 1993
Website: Myspace

FOR FANS OF: DAWN, DARKTHRONE, IMMORTAL, THE FUNERAL PYRE

Dissection were just one of the many awesome bands coming out of Sweden in the early 90's. They combined the darkness and cold hearted lead tremolo picking of black metal and the raw and powerful force of death metal to create an amazing sound. Dissection was reborn in 2004 and released the very rock'n'roll influenced album, Reinkaos, and shortly after, their vocalist/guitarist Jon Nödtveidt committed suicide in the middle of a candle lit pentagram in what was believed to be some sort or occult ritual. If you like a little bit of death in your black metal, or you like your death metal painted black, you can't go wrong with The Somberlain.

Impaled Nazarene- Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace

Artist: Impaled Nazarene
Album: Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace
Genre: Punk/Thrash/Black Metal
Year: 2001
Website: Myspace

FOR FANS OF: NIFELHEIM, SLAYER, MUNICIPAL WASTE, DARKTHRONE

Impaled Nazarene play a thrashy, punked up version of black metal. This is not your typical Mayhem style, one note noodling, tremolo picked black metal. There are razor sharp thrash guitar riffs, fast double bass drumming and higher pitched black metal style vocals. If you like super fast and super catchy punk/metal then check this shit out.

Darkthrone- Plaguewielder

Artist: Darkthrone
Album: Plaguewielder
Genre: Black Metal
Year: 2001
Website: Myspace

FOR FANS OF: BATHORY, CRAFT, SATYRICON, AURA NOIR

Plaguewielder is a commonly skipped over album, overshadowed by Black Metal classics like Transilvanian Hunger and A Blaze In The Northern Sky. This is the middle ground between their early raw black metal sound and their more recent rock'n'roll/punk sound. This is by far the most well produced album in their discography. This album has an awesome black'n'roll sound and the song "Wreak" is one of the best in the genre.

Aura Noir- The Merciless

Artist: Aura Noir
Album: The Merciless
Genre: Black/Thrash Metal
Year: 2004
Website: Myspace

FOR FANS OF: BATHORY, CELTIC FROST/HELLHAMMER, VENOM

Aura Noir would have fit in perfectly with Bathory, Hellhammer, and Venom in the early 80's. They manage to be ugly and raw while still having Grade-A song writing. Highly recommended for any fan of early black metal.

Artist: Dawn
Album: Slaughtersun (Crown Of The Triarchy)
Genre: Black/Death Metal
Year: 1998
Website: Myspace

FOR FANS OF: DISSECTION, IMMORTAL, SATYRICON, THE FUNERAL PYRE

This is a near perfect example of death metal tinged black metal. Amazing riffs and melodies from beginning to end. If you like black metal, get this. Even if you don't, try this.

Sometimes I feel like this is the only black metal album I will ever need.

Album: Bathory
Genre: Black Metal/Thrash
Year: 1984

FOR FANS OF: CELTIC FROST, VENOM, HELLHAMMER, MERCYFUL FATE

The album that launched the first wave of black metal. More "rock" than later black metal. Awesome guitar riffs! Burn some churches to this shit.
